In January 2021, the FAA published its “final rule” on Remote ID, new regulations requiring drones in flight to provide identification and location information that can be received by other parties. Remote ID is meant to help the FAA, law enforcement and other federal agencies find the control station when a drone appears to be flying in an unsafe manner or where it is not allowed to fly.
Doodle Labs’ Remote ID solution is a firmware update for global compliance to meet USA, European and Japanese unique requirements. It is backwards compatible and will be available for all Smart Radios, meaning all Doodle Labs customers can achieve full compliance.
Doodle Labs’ Remote ID solution is based on the existing Smart Radio in the drone platform without the addition of a separate radio, thus saving on precious SWaP (size, weight and power) and avoiding any interference issues that would arise with the use of 2 radios in close proximity.
After numerous delays, the deadline for drone manufacturers to comply with the federal requirements is September 16th, 2022 though the FAA and Department of Transportation just issued a statement effectively bumping the enforcement deadline back to December 16th.
Doodle Labs’ Remote ID solution is targeted to be available in time for that. Advantages of Remote ID with Mesh Rider include:
FAA Compliance – Fully compliant to all the Standard Remote ID requirements for Drone Manufacturers, specified by FAA
Zero Additional SWaP – Use the existing radio in the drone with zero additional SWaP. Eliminates the complexity of integrating an additional module and avoids associated interference issues.
Interference Avoidance – Available with Doodle Labs 2.4 GHz (RM-2450) and 5.8 GHz (RM-5800) in all radio form factors (Embedded, mini-OEM and nano-OEM)
