Radio Solutions for UAS Command Control

uAvionix SkyLink UAS C2 radiouAvionix SkyLink UAS C2 radiouAvionix has released an article detailing some of the design considerations for radios used for command and control (C2) of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), as well as two of their specialized solutions for UAS C2.

According to the company, many UAS operators overlook critical factors when selecting a C2 radio, assuming that many systems are largely the same, and failing to take aspects into consideration such as polarization, redundancy, encryption and more.

The article covers:

  • A recent accident in which a 95kg drone experienced a fly-away event and entered controlled airspace, due to the poor design of its C2 link
  • The downsides of using Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) frequencies for drone C2
  • How uAvionix’ microLink system uses frequency hopping algorithms, redundant radios and two antennas oriented in different planes to provide the best possible ISM solution
  • TSO certification for aviation protected spectrum use
  • Development of the SkyLink C-Band radio, which is expected to achieve ranges exceeding 40 nautical miles for aircraft above 1000 ft AGL and will be an essential component for FAA type certifications and safety cases
